Amsterdam Pays Street Cleaners in Beer

Amsterdam officials have put together a somewhat dubious scheme to clean city streets and coax its population of pesky alcoholics into better shape at the same time: Workers who'd normally hang out on park benches all day now get $13, a plug of rolling tobacco, and five cans of light beer whenever they vacate park benches and spruce things up a bit. Consensus on all sides is that it's a pretty good deal, not least because of the choice of refreshment; one street cleaner tells Agence France Presse, "What's also good is that the beer they give us is light, 5 percent, not 11 percent or 12 percent like I used to drink."
