The Tribeca resident is among a fleet of investors opening Project 179, described as a "major hospitality, dining and cultural destination" in Shanghai. Among the future tenants is an 80,000-square-foot boutique hotel along the lines of the Bowery or Greenwich Hotel, and a collection of restaurants "led by accomplished restaurateurs currently operating distinguished establishments in the United States," according to a press release. The 850,000-square-foot complex has been "designed to reflect classic 1920s Shanghai." No specific operators have been named, but De Niro famously opened Tribeca Grill and Nobu, as well as Andrew Carmellini's Locanda Verde. Shanghai and actors historically tend not to mix, but this one's a little bit different. [PR Web via Deadline]
