Two concepts in the extended SushiSamba restaurant family are opening at 120 West 42nd Street, reports Crain’s: Miami’s Sugarcane Raw Bar Grill will head north and open on one side of the city’s newest location of the global Japanese-South American fusion chain, and the U.S. debut of Duck & Waffle will open on the other. Sugarcane specializes in cocktails, raw bar, and crudo, while Duck & Waffle is an oddball concept that opened last year in London’s Heron Tower and has since become a hit — it even surpassed professed SushiSamba-hater Jay Rayner’s expectations. The menu takes cues from “rustic” and “seasonal” dishes, and includes things like ox-cheek-filled doughnuts, duck eggs cooked in a cocotte, and, of course, confit duck thighs served on a waffle with mustard and maple sauce. The restaurants are set to open within the Cubes, a 75,000-square-foot retail space made up, as you may have guessed, of many glass cubes. Meanwhile, the site reports that Whole Foods, which is about to open in Gowanus, wants in on the Bryant Park action and is considering opening a store next door, at 1095 Sixth Avenue.
