It’s Been a Very Bad Week for Costco

At least one person in San Francisco got sick after eating rotisserie chicken contaminated with salmonella, leading Costco to recall over 40,000 pounds of Foster Farms chicken sold between September 11 and 23 at the 1600 El Camino Real store. The company’s vice-president is insisting that the chicken was properly cooked, and that it “may have been a very, very uncommon cross-contamination issue.” (He repeated the word “very,” so that means you should believe him.) Over in Canada, Costco had to recall organic ground beef sold in British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan because of a potential E. coli contamination. There have been no reported illnesses so far, so at least Costco’s being proactive about fixing its fuckups. [LA Times, Food Safety News]
