After overhearing a teary discussion of a recent medical diagnosis between two women dining adjacent to him at a Boston-area restaurant, an unidentified restaurant customer surreptitiously handed the waiter a note to say he’d cover their check. The startled waiter went ahead and posted the customer’s heartwarming note to Reddit, of course, which goes to show that acts of kindness still exist in restaurants, despite all the nasty stuff out there in hospitality land.

HuffPo digs in a little and learns that the good Samaritan, who dined alone at the bar at the unnamed restaurant and had reportedly been “making jokes and such” all night, silently slipped the waiter a note that read: “Do me a favor and bring me their check. Someone just got diagnosed.” Of course, the “Don’t tell them” written below was ignored, because there aren’t enough of these type of warm fuzzies and they just need to be shared. The waiter says the women, whom he suspects are mother and daughter, had started crying after one of them took a phone call, and informing them that their check had already been taken care of turned out to be a bright spot in the evening. “The mother was overwhelmed with gratitude, as was I,” the waiter says. “It was a great evening.”

While waiting tables tonight, a mother and daughter started crying mid-meal…
