Subway Sandwich Artist Who Spoke at Workers’ Rally Fired From Job

A worker at a Subway in Seattle says he was fired for participating in recent fast-food strikes and speaking at a rally for workers seeking a raise to $15 an hour. Capitol Hill Seattle Blog reports that Carlos Hernandez appeared at the August 29 rally and encouraged others to participate in strikes, but was later told he was being fired because he gave away a free cookie to a kid. Hernandez says he sometimes gives out complimentary cookies but always pays for them out of his tips; he was fired just after the rally, the blog reports, and because the shop was busy, he hadn’t yet been able to pay for the cookie in question.
