The inclusion of “Russ and Daughters Café” on a recent Community Board agenda got people very excited, briefly: A new café outpost — possibly headed to 127 Orchard Street — could harken back to the good ol’ days when Russ & Daughters catered to hungry customers late into the night (the shop shortened its hours in the seventies when the LES was a not-terrific place to be at one in the morning). Now, though, late-night bagels with caviar would no doubt play very well in the neighborhood. Sadly, a rep for Russ & Daughters tells Grub Street that the inclusion was a mistake, though they didn’t elaborate and didn’t deny that they could have something in the works — meaning it’s possible they’re just trying to keep the project under wraps for the time being.
