Dewar’s Taps Charles Bukowski Poem to Sell Scotch

Dewar’s has lifted some lines from Charles Bukowski’s “So You Want to Be a Writer” as the narration for a husky, heroic White Label Scotch ad. It’s a grand tribute to manhood, to be sure, but somehow the wholesomely robust rugby players and rock climbers and cattle wranglers that seemingly represent the ideal Dewar’s drinkers aren’t quite compatible with the notion of one of literature’s most notorious alcoholics. Plus, we hate to break it to Dewar’s, but before his death, Bukowski already awarded his inebriate’s endorsement to beer with these famous lines: “Stay with the beer / beer is continuous blood / a continuous lover.”
