Celebrity chef and The Taste co-host Nigella Lawson was choked and physically abused by her multimillionaire husband Charles Saatchi after they dined at an outdoor table at Scott’s in Mayfair. Several photos depict Lawson being choked and pushed. The Mirror has a detailed description of the incident, which for the most part took place in view and within earshot of people on the street, one of whom tells the tabloid that “It was utterly shocking to watch,” and “it was horrific, really.”

Saatchi has since issued a statement claiming the couple was arguing, but says they “had made up by the time we were home.” As for the allegations of violence, the famous art collector says “there was no grip, it was a playful tiff. The pictures are horrific but give a far more drastic and violent impression of what took place.”

“Nobody intervened although the incident looked brutal,” the tabloid reports. That, and the photos of violence are worth more.

Meanwhile, BNP politician Nick Griffin made a pathetic attempt to be funny on Twitter. “If I had the opportunity to squeeze Nigella Lawson,” he wrote, “her throat wouldn’t be my first choice.”

Update: Charles Saatchi reportedly “accepted a caution for assault” after the incident.
