Watch Jimmy Carter Implore All Americans to Forgive Paula Deen

By

Turns out that the former president of the United States and the celebrity chef grew up in towns some 40 miles apart from each other, and moreover, they've been "good friends" for some time, he tells CNN. The fallout over Deen's alleged past racism continues this afternnoon — add J.C. Penney to the list of companies that have announced they are severing ties with the chef — and Carter goes in for the diplomatic jugular. "I've known Paula Deen quite well for a long period of time," he says, while cautioning there's no justification for hurtful words. "I advised her to let the dust settle and make apologies."
