Wrigley will start selling a caffeinated gum with the equivalent of about half a cup of coffee. Alert Energy Caffeine Gum, Wrigley's effort to tap into the growing market for energy drinks, will be sold in convenience stores and food and drug retailers.

It hasn't been a good week for gum: In response to the FDA's investigation of the dangers of foods and drinks with added caffeine, Wrigley is temporarily halting production, sales, and marketing of its new Alert Energy Caffeine Gum. One piece contains as much caffeine as half a cup of coffee, which could be especially dangerous for children and adolescents. Props to Wrigley for listening to the FDA's legitimate public-health concerns. Monster should take note. [Earlier, Earlier, NBC, Earlier]
