In January, the Bedford location of Oslo Coffee was destroyed by a fast-moving fire. The destruction was so bad that owner J.D. Merget thought about abandoning the shop, but grassroots efforts from his neighbors helped him through the hard time: Lucky Dog threw a fund-raiser for unemployed Oslo staff members, and strangers even donated money. “It’ll be hard to open without tearing up,” says Merget. “As much as I’ve had a hard time with the neighborhood’s growth and changes, it reconnected me with my neighbors.” See? Gentrification has its upsides! [Earlier, DNAinfo]
