Predictably, Mission Chinese Food founding chef Danny Bowien walked away with the 2013 James Beard Award for Rising Star during the ceremony that just kicked off in the last hour in New York City. This means that three-time nominee Thomas McNaughton (Flour + Water) was once again disappointed this evening in this category. Sonoma’s own Merry Edwards won the prize for Outstanding Wine, Beer or Spirits Professional, after being nominated six times. And Christopher Kostow of The Restaurant at Meadowood nabs the Best Chef prize for the West region, beating out local contenders Daniel Patterson, Chris Cosentino, and Corey Lee. Next up: The award for Best New Restaurant, which has two S.F. contenders. You can follow along with the live tweets from the James Beard Foundation if you want to be nerdy about it, or we will update you as we hear more about the local chefs and restaurants up for prizes. [James Beard Foundation, Earlier] Update: … And State Bird Provisions has won Best New Restaurant, marking the first time that a San Francisco restaurant has taken this prize since 2000.
