A new Middle Eastern food truck with an Egyptian twist (and plenty of pork) has arrived in Oakland, and it’s called Royal Egyptian Cuisine. As the East Bay Express reports, despite the humble setting, the proprietor is seasoned home cook Elmy Kader, who first learned to cook at an upscale restaurant in Marseille in the seventies but who hasn’t run a restaurant or truck himself before now. Kader is known for bantering with customers and relying on charm more than Twitter — though he has that too — to build his customer base. “Whatever you order, Kader will serve it up with a wink and maybe an anecdote or a bit of endearing shtick,” they say. They also assure us “Kader’s food is quite good,” and the menu consists of falafel and gyros as well as barbecue chicken, ribs, and spit-roasted pork and chicken shawarma. And eventually he wants to launch a seafood truck too. [EBX]
