Unable to Mitigate Sound Issues, Live at the Rrazz Shuts Down Permanently

Last we heard, Live at the Rrazz was temporarily closing to deal with some sound conflicts with their neighbors, but were staying open for the week of March 19 in order to host a planned engagement with Patti Lupone. The latest incarnation of the cabaret-centric Rrazz Room, relocated in January to the mezzanine level of 1000 Van Ness, seems to have run afoul of the movie theater upstairs, and had to face the Entertainment Commission in February. Today the owners sent out an email to loyal fans announcing that the closure is for good this time, and adding, “It seems like all the forces in the universe have been working against us.”

This is just the latest in a string of cursed projects to enter this space, including the extremely short-lived Holly’s Comedy Club, and The Showroom. And the closure follows on the Rrazz team of Robert Kotonly and Rory Paull getting evicted from their longtime home at the Hotel Nikko in December over some conflict with hotel management.

That space on the second floor of the Hotel Nikko, as we reported a couple weeks back, is becoming a West Coast branch of Feinstein’s, the New York cabaret club run by singer Michael Feinstein.

Kotonly and Paull list about 70 people they want to thank for the past success of the Rrazz Room, including Mary Wilson, Pia Zadora, and Jon Secada.
