Hurricane Sandy delayed the opening of fashion district steakhouse Desmond’s by four months, but the real kicker happened six weeks ago when its cooks and waiters flew the coop with no advance warning. “They were all in cahoots,” manager Patrick Kelly tells Crain’s. “We got bamboozled.” Turns out that notoriously flighty chef Conrad Gallagher — last seen trying to drum up enthusiasm for something called PoshBurger Bistro in Las Vegas — had been hired as the restaurant’s consulting chef. Crain’s reports that owner Paul Hurley thought that Gallagher’s “controversial personality would generate buzz.” Desmond’s now has an entirely new staff in place. [Crain’s, Earlier]
