Red Hook Winery Still Cannot Bottle Last Year’s Harvest

Welcome back!
Welcome back!

Fork in the Road visits the new and improved, post-Sandy Red Hook Winery at Pier 41 and happily, finds the tasting room open once again. More than 70 local wines stored off-site during last year’s storm are now being poured and paired with Saxelby Cheesemongers cheese and Cacao Prieto chocolate. Last year’s harvest, however, is still in limbo: The contents of each barreled fermentation still need to be lab-tested, but the winery hasn’t received any insurance money and the analysis will run more than $20,000. “A major quarantine is still going on,” says owner Mark Snyder, “and we are basically in a holding pattern.” In the meantime, Snyder is thinking about bottling his reserved wine as blend with local or Napa wine under the names “Hurricane Sandy” or “Pier 41 Napa.” [Fork in the Road/VV, Earlier, Earlier]
