The modest sandwich shop with the boastful red and green neon sign proclaiming “Best Cuban Sandwiches” has closed in Chelsea, Jeremiah’s Vanishing New York reports. Owner Tom Vicari took charge and degreased the ancient greasy spoon Havana Chelsea in 2007, opening with the new name Casa Havana and a streamlined menu of solid Cuban sandwiches — he even kept the old chef. In 2010, Vicari told Grub Street he was under siege, literally, by his landlord, who wanted him out over a rent dispute. It’s not yet known why the restaurant shuttered, Jeremiah reports, but the closure happened sometime last week. [JVNY, Earlier]
