After a long construction and low-key soft-opening period, The Garage on Motor Ave. is ready to formally bust out of the gate in Palms tonight. The shiny new sports pub, strewn with vintage gas station signage, is all about fun and games, with two distinct areas for dining and drinking, twelve flat-screen televisions showing the latest in “sport,” and a non-Susan Sarandon-sanctioned ping pong table.
It may be a little too chilly at this point, but The Garage also has an impressive al fresco patio, albeit with five more television sets, allowing you to be more like those weird neighbors who drag their couch onto the lawn, but with better booze. Someone seems to know something behind the bar, where craft cocktails, Sculpin IPA, and Kung Fu Girl Riesling all make the cut.
The menu skips today’s gastro-eccentricities like eel pie, pig’s feet poutine, and chicken liver mousse for fairly standard pub grub with interesting ingredient additions. A twelve-dollar, 8-ounce house burger includes sour cherry lacquered bacon and peppercorn aioli, while a Cuban sandwich is made with beer mustard and a Philly cheese steak with poblano peppers. There’s seven styles of pizza (one of them flavored like a cheeseburger), five salads (including one with soba noodles), and small plates including six varieties of sliders like chicken parm, pulled pork, and lobster roll, as well as chips “loaded” with short ribs and habanero jack, truffled tots, and jerk chicken wings.
With a clean look, engaging concept, progressive drinks program, and accommodating dishes, it appears someone has been watching their share Bar Rescue. The Garage on Motor is open seven days a week from 5:00 P.M. to 2:00 A.M., with happy hour specials from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. on weekdays.
