Everybody Hurts: Restaurant That Inspired R.E.M. Album Needs Help

In 1992, R.E.M. adopted the motto from Dexter Weaver’s Athens, Georgia, restaurant, Weaver D’s Delicious Fine Foods, “Automatic for the People.” The album became a classic, and the restaurant skyrocketed to fame. But like something out of VH1’s Behind the Music, the 26-year-old soul food landmark has fallen on hard times, and Weaver’s begging people to help him stay open.

The Athens Banner Herald reports that years of declining business and higher food costs have taken their toll, and on Friday the gas company showed up at his restaurant to cut him off. He managed to talk them out of it (think of the nostalgia!), and now he’s pleading with Athenians to eat his fried chicken once more. He probably shouldn’t count on Michael Stipe for support, though: In 2009, an angry Babbo waitress hinted that he’s a “Twat Waffle” who failed to tip on a $2,000 comped meal.
