Hugue Dufour and Sarah Obraitis say they have canceled plans to put horse-meat tartare on the menu at their five-day-old café inside MoMA PS1. The M. Wells Dinette owners issued a statement yesterday afternoon citing ambiguous laws and protesters who argued that horse slaughter is inhumane and that horse meat has been shown to be unsafe that had effectively forced their hand. Dufour and Obraitis point out that the restaurant served 5,000 horse-bologna sandwiches at GoogaMooga over the summer without any fuss, before inviting all the café's neighbors to stop in to say hello and have a glass of wine. "At any rate," they sign off, "we cry uncle." [Diner's Journal/NYT, Earlier, Earlier]
