Red Lobster, Cracker Barrel, and Olive Garden restaurants will give discounts or serve smaller portions to diners who have gotten gastric bypass surgery and present so-called WLS (Weight Loss Surgery) cards. The practice is not new, notes the Salt, but is gaining in popularity, to the point that the all-you-can-eat buffet chain Golden Corral also gives discounts to diners with acceptable proof of surgery. “Now there’s so much word of mouth about it,” says the director at the Penn State Surgical Weight Loss program, “that if we forget to give them out [after surgery], the patient says, ‘What about those discount cards?’” [Salt/NPR]
