Farmer John Under Attack!

We get a little defensive of Farmer John, but only because we’d take a bullet for Vin Scully, whose voice we hear every time the brand’s name pops up. Today, the gargantuan pork purveyor could probably use a guardian, as the Farm Animal Rights Movement is descending on its South L.A. slaughterhouse to raise objections to the daily slaughter of 6,000 swine there, an annual total of 1.5 million piggies. Led by the group’s founder, Holocaust survivor Alex Hershaft, the protest coincides with World Farm Animals Day. Hershaft offers numerous parallels between Farmer John and the Holocaust, as reported by LAist. The activist says, “I see a striking parallel between the deceptive bucolic images of pigs cavorting in green meadows on Farmer John’s murals and the cynical inscription ‘Work makes you free’ over the gate to Auschwitz.” Ouch! Guess we’ll be canceling that Dodger Dog and sticking to peanuts and Cracker Jack tonight.
