Chocolate Consumption and Nobel Prize Winners May Be More Connected Than You Think

New research published this week in the New England Journal of Medicine indicates countries that produce more Nobelists are populated with people who eat more chocolate. Franz Messerli, the paper’s Swiss author, is a cardiologist at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital who says the idea to investigate the relationship between Nobel winners and chocolate consumption came to him while he was thinking about smart Swiss people. “The Swiss also had the highest chocolate consumption in the world,” he tells NPR’s the Salt. “I put two and two together and thought, ‘Well, China must have much less chocolate consumption and probably not that many prizewinners per capita. Let’s just plot the two.’” [NEJM, Salt/NPR]
