Allow us to update you on the pending expansion of the Upper Haight’s best watering hole and duck-heart emporium, The Alembic. The proposed, multi-use project at the next-door Red Vic space, which includes a doubling in size of the Alembic’s seating area into the theater’s former lobby, is up for approval at today’s Planning Commission meeting. As Curbed reports, the plans call for 49 new seats for the Alembic, and two doorways broken through the wall of the Alembic’s existing bar area connecting the two spaces. Also, as we’ve reported earlier, the Second Act Marketplace and Events project in the former Red Vic will include several food stalls, slated to be occupied by Picnic Bakery, which is vegan; a grab-and-go spot called High Cotton; and Lali’s, a La Cocina-supported business featuring Georgian cuisine. There’s been big support from the neighborhood and approval for the project is expected, but we’re thinking the projected opening by the end of the year sounds unlikely at this point.
