Judge Rules Warhol Estate Free to Use Velvet Underground’s Famous Banana

The Velvet Underground is pissed, all these years later, that Andy Warhol’s foundation has licensed the rockers’ iconic banana logo on run-of-the-mill consumer goods like iPad cases (but not, thankfully, on Warhol-inspired soup cans). However, attempts to make the estate stop have gone splat — a judge ruled that, since Warhol never copyrighted the banana he plucked from an advertisement to use on the band’s first album, there’s no legal traction.
