Today KCET reveals that today’s pop-up restaurant craze is hardly a new one, looking back to a Rodeo Drive restaurant of some renown. In the tough year of 1929, one Francesca “Mama” Weiss pulled a Starry Kitchen and turned her apartment into an impromptu cafe serving Hungarian dishes. Before long, Mama Weiss’ Hungarian Csarda expanded to a new locale, served stars like Charles Laughton and Billy Wilde, and was joined by neighbors like The Brown Derby. Mama also went on to be one of the first celeb chefs with her own T.V. show. [KCET]
