Save the cupmudgeonism — good cupcakes never really go out of style. And Sift Cupcake & Dessert Bar, which already has three locations in the North Bay and is opening another this a.m. in the former Dumplings & Buns space at California and Fillmore, makes a mean cupcake. Owner Andrea Ballus started the business because she couldn’t find anywhere in wine country that made the kind of unique desserts she wanted at her wedding, and she went on to win a battle on Cupcake Wars last year, becoming the only Bay Area baker to do so — the winning cupcake: raspberry cake with champagne buttercream.
She covers the basics, flavor-wise, like red velvet, chocolate, and carrot cake, but Sift also specializes in unique flavors like pink Champagne, limonatta, snickerdoodle, snowball, The Battle Royale (almond cake with a blueberry tequila filling, acai berry cream cheese frosting), samoa, and the Stud Muffin (a Lagunitas beer cupcake with salted caramel frosting and cayenne-dusted bacon bits). In addition to cupcakes, Sift also serves French macarons, profiteroles, ice cream sandwiches, cake shakes (!), and some inventive creations like cruffles (cake and frosting blended together and dunked in chocolate), salted caramel krispy cakes, and frosting-filled cookie sandwiches called “whoopie cookies.”
It’s become a tradition when they open a new location to do a cupcake giveaway, so, this morning, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., they’ll be handing out free cupcakes — one per customer. Get one while you can. (Or follow them on Twitter for future alerts.)
And now that Citizen Cake is no more, we imagine the non-dieting segment of the neighborhood will be grateful for the new dessert option.
