A taqueria in New Zealand’s downtown Auckland City calls itself the Original California Burrito Company and boasts a variety of burritos named after various California spots. (Why Fisherman’s Wharf for San Francisco, we wonder?) Considering all the burritos on the menu contain rice — a Northern California norm, Southern California folks would probably beg to differ on the authenticity of this “original California burrito” claim. According to Serious Eats, the California burrito came about in San Diego and is primarily made up of meat and potatoes, designed to be quick and filling for surfers who just got out of the water. Grub Street thinks both the rice and potato varieties sound pretty darn delicious right about now. [Uptown Almanac]
