Our college self is keening: It turns out the tapioca pearls we’ve all been happily slurping for years through fat, colorful straws may contain carcinogens. German researchers found evidence that the “bubbles” that give the popular tea its name are laced with a bunch of hard-to-pronounce chemicals, including “polychlorinated biphenyls or PCBs such as styrene, acetophenone, and brominated substances.” Yikes. While they had everyone’s attention, the researchers saw fit to note that the pearls also pose a choking hazard to kids. Wah-wah. [NYDN]
