Secret Restaurant Lingo Equal Parts Offensive and Amazing

If you're ever at Daniel and "artichoke" is written on your bill, rest assured, you're a hottie. Conversely, if you're at Junoon and V.D.G. is scribbled somewhere, it's time that you know: You're a very difficult guest. And if you happen to be at Le Cirque with a date you're not crazy about, and you see S'ammazzano penciled in, run away fast as you can; the shmuck is about to propose. [NYT]

Down East Sails Into the LES This Weekend

A walk-by today finds action at the former home of Fisk, the Scandinavian takeout annex next door to now-closed White Slab Palace, now Grey Lady. Grey's co-owner Ryan Chadwick was in the house, and he tells us he'll open Down East in the space this weekend. The takeout seafood joint (named for Chadwick's native Maine) will be open for lunch and dinner, with walls papered in vintage lobster and clam posters, and a few counter seats. On the menu: clam and lobster rolls, a fish sandwich, a hot dog, and possibly the only takeout oysters-on-the-half-shell in town. Behind the shop, in the space that used to house White Slab Palace's back room, Chadwick and his partners are building a 24-person private dining room decorated like an "angler's club," he says.

Don’t Forget to Put Soup Cans on Andy Warhol’s Grave

Or Coke bottles. Those are the tributes of choice left by the fans who visit Andy Warhol's grave near Pittsburgh, as NPR reports. (Guess they're less perishable than Whoppers?) Some big spenders even leave Chanel perfume. Now, artist Madelyn Roehrig has documented the graveside gifts in a photo compilation, as part of a project called "Figments: Conversations With Andy." See the pics below.

Marcus Samuelsson on the Ballet That Is His Brand

"We constantly have to edit, curate, sift through our brand ... Where is the stretch? Where is the perfect fit? Where does it make sense? You have to be a Baryshnikov." —Marcus Samuelsson, in a story about his many hats. [NYT]

Lunchables Lures Kids With Cool Campaign, Still Pure Crap

Lunchables has launched the “Never Be Bored Again” campaign which shells out major gifts to kiddies including thousands of toys and games, and ultimately "a multiroom treehouse, a backyard court for multiple sports or an electronics-filled game room." But Nerf guns be gone: 91 percent of its meals still don't meet nutritional requirements. Boo. [NYT]

Mars Lands on Oreos

Who could possibly argue with this?Photo: Twitter/OreoCookie

Kraft and Nabisco have perfected the art of cookie as social commentary: Their #dailytwist Twitter campaign showcases Oreos that reflect the news, sometimes complete with backlash. A few weeks ago, some people were enraged when they ran a photo of this prideful rainbow Oreo cookie. (These are probably the same people who enjoy dining at Chick-fil-A.) Anyway, Nabisco played it safe today with a picture we can all get behind: Check out this cute photo of a red-frosted cookie in honor of the Curiosity Rover landing safely on Mars. Hopefully NASA can determine if they eat sweets on the Red Planet. [OreoCookie/Twitter, Earlier]

Bon Appétit Launches ‘Seal of Approval’ Program

This December, Bon Appétit will reveal a top secret "Seal of Approval" product list, featuring the top 25 products that Team BA can't live without. "The ones that make the cut will deliver the best value, taste, comparative excellence, and performance," says Adam Rapoport. Unlike other popular seals of approval, Bon App's is strictly editorially driven (no adverti$ing motives).

No Dead Piggies on April Bloomfield’s U.K. Book Cover

The cover is out for the soon-to-be-released U.K. version of A Girl and Her Pig, and it's definitely a different animal than the one released in these parts. Stateside, you'll recall, April Bloomfield is pictured on the cover with a limp, dead piglet slung over her shoulders in a kind of badass tribute to extreme pork-tasticness. Meanwhile, the British rendition looks like the sort thing you could bring to Gran to enjoy with a spot of tea. Different continent, different message? [Earlier]

Watch Renowned French Chef Jean Joho Discuss Julia Child’s Insatiable Appetite

Sunday was Julia Child's 100th birthday, and to mark the occasion, her longtime publisher, Alfred A. Knopf, is celebrating Julia Child Restaurant Week, featuring events at over 100 top restaurants around the country which identify with her legacy of making classic French cooking accessible to everyone. We decided to mark the occasion by talking with one of the French chefs in America who knew Julia and became her friend — Chef Jean Joho of Everest and Paris Club in Chicago, Eiffel Tower Restaurant in Las Vegas, and Brasserie Jo in Boston. In the first of two short videos, Chef Joho recalls Julia's enthusiasm when she found out about the opening of the original Brasserie Jo in Chicago, and how she insisted they go over and sample some of the food — right after a full dinner at Everest. Watch it below.

Hope for Chick-fil-A Fans With Good Hearts

For those who feel they can't eat Chick-fil-A in good conscience anymore, yet struggle with the self-punishment of never eating it again at all, there's now "Chicken Offset," a program devised by D.C. lawyer and activist Ted Frank. "Every time you buy a chicken-sandwich meal at Chick-fil-A, you can buy an 'offset' here," promises Frank, who will sell "offset coupons" which benefit It Gets Better and the Williams Institute. But the supersized karma doesn't stop there ...

Leske’s Bakery Gets a New Lease (on Life) This Week

Back in business.

Last year, 50-year-old Scandanavian bakery Leske's shut its Bay Ridge doors. But now we learn the bakery will reopen Wednesday under new ownership. The move has the blessing of the Leske family, and much of the old staff will return, with the same Scandinavian recipes — plus black-and-white cookies — the shop is known for. To celebrate, Leske's is throwing a "cookie-breaking" celebration at 11:30 on Wednesday, with free cookies all day until they run out. After that, hours will be 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily.

Realtors Moonlighting As Restaurateurs

Apartmentinis.

To make extra money, meet new clients, and because the two professions are closely intertwined, several real estate agents are opening restaurants of their own. Like Brian and Joey Morgan, who own Traffic and WashOut. And Christine O’Neal — a realtor and an owner of the Boat Basin. Other restaurants birthed by brokers? Tre Otto, Taproom No. 307, and Donna in Brooklyn. [NYT]
