Bauer Loves the Wine, Calls the Food ‘Ponderous’ at St. Vincent

As we did, Mr. Bauer did enjoy the dry-aged sirloin for two with creamed spinach and a fantastic twice-baked potato.

Michael Bauer is the first to file a formal review of St. Vincent (1270 Valencia Street), the new wine tavern from former Quince sommelier David Lynch. Bauer finds the international selection of wines all excellent and he’s happy to put his “fate” in the hands of the very knowledgeable service staff. “I’ve never been disappointed,” he writes. However when it comes to the food, he finds a lot of it too heavy and pub-like, and “Dish after dish seemed ponderous, as if the restaurant were situated in a logging camp in Montana rather than in the heart of the Mission.” He is, however, a fan of yellow-eyed pea and beef tongue appetizer, as well as two dishes we loved ourselves, the pickled eggs and the dry-aged sirloin for two. The verdict: two and a half stars. [Chron]
