Menino Parties at Back Deck to Make Downtown Crossing Happen

Mayor Menino blasted Chick-fil-A’s anti-gay beliefs on Friday, but today he’s in the news for happier reasons: Downtown Crossing is getting more exciting! Menino will hold court at the neighborhood’s new Back Deck barbecue parlor for a “block party” this afternoon to celebrate a $3.2 million funding initiative for the area.

As the Globe notes, the Back Deck is one of 10 new restaurants opening or planning to open in the once crumbling neighborhood this year. Menino and his team hope for a “renaissance” in the area. To that end, he wants to fix sidewalks, add street lights, and make the area more attractive to new businesses and restaurants (except Chick-fil-A, of course). Wegmans has set its sights on the area, so really, it’s just a matter of time. Though if Menino wants to secure his legacy, maybe he could make a deal with Shake Shack?
