Chick-fil-A, the chain that may or may not have invented the fried chicken sandwich but definitely donated millions of dollars to the anti-gay-marriage movement, is trying to promote its “Cow Appreciation Day” on Facebook. But gay rights advocates and gay people on Facebook aren’t ready to forget the company’s well publicized position in the culture war. Chick-fil-A’s marketing department put up a fill-in-the-blank game on their Facebook page, encouraging fans to fill in the phrase “My favorite part of Cow Appreciation Day is ____.” And wouldn’t you know, there are already dozens of comments filling in the blank with “homophobia.”

Comments include things like, “Cows are not judgemental about sexual orientation,” and the more creative, “giving preference to the rights of straight cows while using vast amounts of money to make life hard for gay cows.” And one fan of Chick-fil-A’s food, who may in fact eat it on the sly but feels really terrible afterwards, has this to say:

A Largely Homophobic, Right Wing, and Religious Company!!!! but gosh darn you make good chicken but its not worth supporting you!

There are also a lot of comments from Chick-fil-A supporters, too, who don’t have time for debating — or just agree with — the company’s stance on gay marriage. For instance:

You can and should love the sinner but hate the sin. CFA is the only FF [fast food] that my family will eat and we thank you for your values!

… and …

you can’t call someone a bigot because they don’t agree with your principles..and vice versa..its a simple question stop complicating it..chicken lol

Social media, in other words, is not always your best bet when you have a PR problem that won’t go away.
