Here is everyone’s favorite gourmet depot, Bi-Rite on 18th Street, back when it was a humbler neighborhood market owned by “three veterans,” ca. 1947. This photograph is part of a cache of historic photos of the Mission that are currently being sorted by the San Francisco Public Library’s photo curator Christina Moretta for an upcoming exhibit about the Mission. The photos all came from city archives, from the police department, assessor’s office, and public works, and Moretta says they often show a “grittier, more industrial” Mission, with a “very white” demographic.
