Soho Welcomes Everyman Espresso; Celeb Chef Dies at 29

Top Chef star and restaurateur Elizabeth Falkner will make an appearance at Brooklyn Winery on July 26 for Taste of the Marcellus, a fund-raiser to support the fight against fracking in New York. Tickets for the event, which will also host a slew of notable local chefs, are on sale now online. [Grub Street]

• East Village coffeehouse Everyman Espresso has opened a new location on West Broadway in Soho. Owner Sam Penix, the heavily tattooed barista known for serving hard-to-find coffees, told the Times that the additional location will allow him to expand Everyman's menu. [Diner's Journal/NYT]

The Beagle posted a message on its website that it is undergoing a long-term closing for renovations, but plans to reopen in August with an "awesome" new look and more menu options. Owner Matthew Piacentini tells Eater he'll be "pushing [the] cocktails and sherry as hard as ever" when he reopens the restaurant. [Eater NY]

Dine With Dannon

We can't seem to come up with the right term for it (yogursterant doesn't really do it), but Dannon, of Activia fame, has gone and opened a restaurant on Park Avenue near 42nd called the Yogurt Culture Co., reports Crain's. And it's not just any dessert shop: You'll find "yogurt-infused sandwiches, muffins and salads," plus frozen yogurt. Guess the smooth stuff is suddenly cool? [Crain's]

Cleaning Day at Café Habana and Habana Outpost

That's not the beach?

No corn, Cubans, or Courtney and Coco Cox at Café Habana today! Even though the restaurant's blog says that the side-by-side Habanas will be closed today and tomorrow "for our annual staff field trip to the beach. Vamos a la Playa!" the scene looks more like a grande wash-down, with every piece of furniture on the street being hosed and scrubbed. Speaking of pretty, sparkly things, isn't it kind of strange how they sell out all their celebrity clientele here?

Mark Bittman Turning ‘Vegan Before 6’ Philosophy Into a Book

How to eat everything ... vegan.Photo: Stephen Lovekin/Getty Images

Maybe he was in cahoots with the sneaky vegan group, after all: Reps write in to say that Mark Bittman is hard at work on his new book, and it's all about his selective-veganism approach to eating meat-free before 6:00 p.m. You may recall a few years back when he first divulged his "VB6" philosophy and said he'd lost 30 pounds with the plan. VB6: Eat Vegan Before 6:00 to Lose Weight and Restore Your Health … for Good, will hit bookshelves next March. [Earlier]

Nora Ephron’s Memorial Includes, Naturally, Recipes

WWD reports that "a recipe for 'Esther Fein's Brisket' is included in the notes at Nora Ephron's memorial." While Clyde Haberman tweets, "Nora Ephron memorial's program had perfect added touch: her recipe for spaghetti alla checca ... " An ever-graceful goodbye; just in time for tomato season. Critical Mass

"You will go through stretches where the thought of going out to another dinner with white truffles will feel like an encumbrance. And thinking that thought, you will hate yourself." —Even when restaurant critics try to make their jobs sound like burdens, they still sound awesome. [Washingtonian]

Heart Attacks for All!

And Bloomberg's worried about large sodas?Photo: Melissa Hom

Last year, we told you about 2nd Ave Deli's artery-clogging legal battle with the southwest's Heart Attack Grill. At issue: the Deli's "Heart-Attack Sandwich" and "Triple Bypass Sandwich," which the Heart Attack Grill said violated its legal rights to all foodstuffs that are in any way named after life-threatening heart conditions. (To be fair, the Grill's food really does work.) Well, good news, New York. A federal judge ruled in the deli's favor, so everyone in New York can still get the half-pound of pastrami stuffed between two fried latkes. Phew! [NYDN, Earlier]

Campbell Soup, PepsiCo Go Healthy

Baby carrots: Campbell's manna?

First Starbucks added juice to its java empire earlier this year, and now Campbell Soup is buying juice and carrot company Bolthouse Farms, writes the Washington Post. Bolthouse's Earthbound Farm and Green Giant baby carrots are a popular healthy snack and the company also sells juices, which complements Campbell's existing V-8 line. The soup giant isn't the only big food biz going healthy: The Times has it that PepsiCo will start rolling out yogurt manufactured by German company Theo Müller. Wonder how that one will stack up in our next taste test? [WP, NYT]

Feeding Troughs: Pork Megaproducer Smithfield Foods Opening Stand-alone Restaurant

Zoinks!

Smithfield Foods — giant ham-business barons, friends of Paula Deen, reluctant dispatchers of gestation crates — will open its very own restaurant tomorrow near the company's Virginia headquarters. The menu's kids section is called "For the Little Piglets," which sounds about right. [Marketwatch]

Duplicitous Vegans Sneak Into Times Story

Eater notices that even Mark Bittman isn't immune from the scourge of the crafty vegan group called Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine. In a piece about dropping milk for health reasons, Bittman quotes the group's president without mentioning the group's real agenda (to make people stop eating and drinking animal products). They're a sneaky group with an even sneakier — yet shockingly effective — name. [Eater National, Earlier]

Sneak Peek at Frozen Social, Bringing Sweet Treats to Bed-Stuy

Frozen Social.

As of tomorrow, Bedford Stuyvestant will no longer be a frozen-dessert desert. Noticing the area hadn’t had a proper ice cream parlor in more than a decade, local entrepreneur Garland Shields decided to found a cone-and-cup shop called Frozen Social just a few steps from the Franklin Avenue C stop. Starting this month, Frozen Social will offer organic and all-natural varieties of ice cream, yogurt, gelato, and flavored ice topped with fresh-cut fruit instead of the usual chocolate and caramel. The striking whitewashed parlor is "part of a growing trend of beautiful businesses in Bed-Stuy,” says Shields. After a soft opening preview tomorrow, the venue will fully open by the end of the month.

Anthony Bourdain’s Got a New Show, Big Summer Plans

Summering in the Hamptons.Photo: Getty Images

Deadline breaks the news that Anthony Bourdain and Nigella Lawson's forthcoming reality show on ABC will be called The Taste. (The name makes the show sound like a semi-companion to ABC's daytime food show, The Chew — should we expect a late-night show called The Swallow to show up on the 2013?) Anyway, what to expect from The Taste: "Four culinary experts will each mentor a team of competing pro and amateur cooks as they vie to turn out the tastiest dish." So it's like The Voice mixed with every other cooking competition show ever. Got it. Anyway, before that, Bourdain's got a little R&R to attend to as well.

Now That Foie Gras Is Illegal, Here’s What California Chefs Are Still Charging the Big Bucks For

Foie, lobster, whatever.

While we wait to see if California's foie gras ban is even constitutional — a judge could issue an injunction to halt the law any day now — we've been curious to see how various law-abiding chefs have been dealing with it. Some have decided to replace the foie on their menus with something equally luxurious, or at least something they can charge an equally luxurious price for. Below, a few examples of what chefs in L.A and San Francisco are serving in lieu of that ultra-fatty liver.

Naked Chef: Jamie Oliver’s Wife Reads His E-mails, Apparently

So says the British Mail: Jools Oliver, wife of Jamie, says, "I’ll check his email. I’ll check his Twitter. I’ll check his phone … He says I’m a jealous girl, but I think I’m fairly laid-back, considering." Good news, though! Jools's sleuthing hasn't turned up any misdeeds from Mr. Oliver just yet. But we're not so sure — Jamie and Jay Rayner sure have seemed cozy lately. [Mail UK]

What to Eat at Cómodo, Opening July 16 in Soho

Mmmm.

We already brought you word of Cómodo, the Latin American restaurant Worth Kitchen supper-clubbers Felipe and Tamy Donnelly are opening in the former Salt space in Soho. Now we learn the project debuts July 16. As promised, Donnelly's lamb sliders served on pão de queijo (Brazilian cheese bread) — a favorite from Worth Kitchens past — will be served; also notable-sounding are the hibiscus and queso fresco spring rolls; escolar tiradito with uni and mint-yogurt vinaigrette; and coffee-rubbed cochinita over a rice cake. But don't take our word for it — check out the menu below. Comodo will offer beer, wine, and sake cocktails (popular in Brazil) and will serve lunch and dinner daily.

Haute Hurling: How the Country’s Best Servers Handle Dining-Room Disasters

Ready to blow at any moment.Photo: PYTHON PICTURES/Ronald Grant/Everett Collection

Dining at an exceptional restaurant is a study in theatrics. Servers’ moves are choreographed with the precision of a ballet. Greetings are rehearsed, dishes are explicated in colorful language, cutlery appears and vanishes as if placed by Houdini. Vexations such as food allergies or blubbering children are handled with grace and dignity. But occasionally, someone throws up.
