La Lupe, the tacos and burritos joint that pioneered South Philly’s now blossoming taqueria boom, has closed up shop at Ninth and Federal Streets. We thought that after holding its own against the “speak English or get bent” climate espoused by its neighbor, Geno’s Steaks, for the past ten years that the Mexican spot would remain unswayed until the end of time. But nonetheless, the restaurant has pulled up its stakes and moved a few blocks north to 1122 South Ninth Street, near Washington, where it’s now neighbors with Terri’s Diner Bar. Here’s hoping that it enjoys at least another decade at those new digs.
