The L.A. Times announces that Ace of Cakes’ head-honcho Duff Goldman is opening a design-your-own-cake store on Melrose this week called CakeMix, which Betty Hallock compares to “Build-a-Bear, but with cakes.” Goldman recently moved his Charm City Cakes to the West Coast, but keeps it closed to the public much like an early-era Willy Wonka. CakeMix is right next door to Charm City, selling pre-made cakes and cake slices with coffee, as well as the option to make your own mawkish monstrosity using the shop’s supplies of fondant and buttercream before plunging into an “airbrush shower.” 8302 Melrose Ave. [LAT; Earlier]
