Atwater Village’s Scottish steakhouse, Tam O’Shanter, is turning 90 next month, which means it’s probably too old to get a job showing off its gams at The Tilted Kilt. But the good news, as relayed by NBC, is that the Lawry’s-operated restaurant is rekindling its 20th-century past with monthly menus that each reprise a prior decade leading back tot he twenties, when the place was founded. This month, the restaurant offers dishes it claims were popular here in the thirties (that’s right, another trendy throwback menu!) such as a toasted oat and whiskey waffle, a planked hamburger steak with “nippy” steak sauce (their term, not our’s), an old-school ode to strawberry cheesecake, and a cheese tamale taken from El Cholo but served with Tam’s chili beans, all available only during dinner service through May 31.
Unfortunately, no one’s clear about any potential haggis plans (sorry Rashida Jones), but the restaurant’s regular menu does carry Scotch rarebit made with Belhaven ale and toad in the hole with a Burgundy sauce, for those who like to eat their booze, and a jidori chicken dish called “Cock O’ the North,” so dig in. Apparently Walt Disney did with some frequency!
