The SoMa Streat Food Park (428 11th Street at Division, see map), which came together pretty quickly since we first heard about it in December, is now ready to welcome its first trucks, and eaters. As discussed previously, the triangular park is S.F.’s first permanent food-truck pod (modeled on similar reuses of vacant lots in Portland), and it features restrooms, wifi, covered seating, a projection screen, and will eventually have its own beer garden too (the permit is pending).
Organizer Carlos Muela has had to do a lot of permit hurdling over the last year, but he sees the park as a great opportunity for the city’s often embattled food trucks, who are frequently chased out of the Financial District and elsewhere by angry brick-and-mortar businesses. He hopes to have the park be used as a private event space, too, but to begin with it will be open regularly to the public, hosting up to ten trucks at a time for both lunch and dinner shifts.
The grand opening festivities will be on Wednesday, June 6, from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., and the list of trucks has not yet been finalized, but we’ll update you as soon as it is.
