Anca Caliman, the owner of Echo Park farmers market staple, Anca’s Romanian, just opened a new Glassell Park cafe and bakery called Lemon Poppy Kitchen, now soft-open on the same block as Verdugo Bar. Teamed with her Anca’s partner, Jack Wilson, Caliman also joins forces on the new bakery with Katie Kildow, the organic jam and preserves-maker who comprises From the Robin’s Nest.

The trio’s new venture serves Handsome Coffee Roasters’ coffee and pastries that change with day, including buttermilk biscuits from Kildow and foremost, a prominent selection of plachintas, the crepe-like Romanian flatbreads Anca’s is best known for filling with the likes of spicy spuds, poppy seed paste, almonds, and ricotta and toppings like plum, dill, and feta.

Caliman offers the treats in traditional, whole wheat, and vegan varieties and also strives towards the goal of bringing disadvantaged members of the community in to work at the bakery. The business is currently open on Verdugo Road from 9:00 A.M. to 2:00 A.M. Wednesdays through Sundays.

Lemon Poppy Cafe, 3324 Verdugo Rd. Glassell Park and can be reached at 323-739-0012.
