What’s Up at Bleeding Heart Bakery West Town?

Sometimes you put what you know out there in a story to see if it will shake other parts of the story loose. At the Time Out Chicago food blog Consume, David Tamarkin has a piece like that about a mystifying situation at Bleeding Heart Bakery. The known facts: 1) Michelle and Vinny Garcia’s Bleeding Heart Bakery closed its Belmont location and opened a big new West Town location with the guys behind Roots pizza. (The latter are not involved with other locations.) 2) Business has been so good that what was going to be Vinny’s cake decorating studio at the West Town location got taken over to handle making the regular stock. 3) Somebody has put up a Facebook page called SOB: Save Our Bakery and even launched a fundraiser set to happen at Cobra Lounge on April 13, all revolving around the notion that the punk rock pastry ethic of Bleeding Heart Bakery is being compromised. And that’s pretty much all that seems clear; who exactly is behind the Facebook page, what’s behind their rather overdramatic “The Man Can’t Stop Our Pastry” rhetoric, and whether there’s a rift between the Garcias and the Roots guys is all pretty mysterious. Read Tamarkin’s piece and see if you can figure it out, and wait for more clues to reveal themselves… maybe in the comments section. UPDATE: This just in from TOC… Bleeding Heart also has an anonymous detractor website…
