Last month, Beastie Boy Mike D told Grub Street he was losing some critical drinking time to an exhibit he was curating at MOCA in conjunction with The Avant Garde Diaries. Today, we learn that Mike’s project is the seventeen-day “Transmission LA: AV CLUB,” which kicks off on April 20th in Downtown. The festival, a continuation of a similar party that kicked-off last year in Berlin, finds a gang load of artists Mike D picked himself, including like Mike Mills, Sage Vaughn, and Tom Sachs adding to this collaborative series that showcases concerts, design, art shows, and a little taste of some good-cooking at a pop-up lead by Kogi and Chego chief Roy Choi.
So far, specifics are slim as to what style of b-boy bouillabaisse Choi will concoct with the help of Mike D. But straight off the wire, the rap pioneer does offer a few words on why Choi was his first pick.
Mike D says of the homegrown chef:
This L.A. native represents the truly global vision and tastes that can be L.A., at least in a culinary sense. Roy truly amazes me with his ability to reinvent radically different cuisines presenting them with respect for what they are but completely remixed or reinvented. His work is really analogous to what a hip hop producer or DJ does, chopping up a sample, re-contextualizing it, adding beets, maybe a little vocal and on and on. And he makes a hell of a mixed tape.
Wait, did he actually mean “beets” or “beats?” Or both? In any case, we’re reaching out to Choi’s camp for more details. But like he’s done again and again with food trucks and his own restaurants, it’s exciting to think Choi could offer a shot in the arm to the never-ending guest-chef/pop-up/art-meets-foodevent trends.
