Los Angeles Brewing Company, a new Downtown bar and restaurant with room for nearly 400 people, is finally set to open this Saturday at noon in two stories of a former Bank of America building on Broadway, following almost two years of pencil-pushing and bureaucratic jive. Blog Downtown reports that Ralph Verdugo’s bar will push 100 draft beers, heavy on SoCal suds, but lacking its own brew for now, along with a menu of affordable “Cali comfort” cuisine.
The project, like many new businesses striving to restore the street, is preserving original, vintage architectural and interior elements, from wrought-iron staircases, bare bricks, and brass lamps to tables cut from the building’s own marble, all under a mezzanine lounge selling organics-only cocktails.
Better yet, as part of Verdugo’s duty to make the block better known for pork products than cheap gold chains and sidewalk churches, his restaurant plans to hand out free appetizers and drinks to customers in waiting limbo, and is looking out for the ladies with essential purse hooks under the bar. Eventually, the owner will turn the building’s lower level into a cigar bar, complete with a tunnel used by bootleggers back in the day, and coolest of all, a door that’s been riddled by machine gun fire.
