You may recall in January our slideshow of our experience judging the regional semi-finals for the S. Pellegrino Almost Famous Competition alongside chefs Jean Joho, Jon-Carl Lachman (who won nationally in the first competition a decade ago), David Posey and Chris Macchia, among others. Our choice was Kendall College student Jennifer Kim, and this weekend in Napa Valley, another, even more illustrious panel of chef judges including Chef Joho, Eric Ripert, Gary Danko, Susur Lee, Tony Mantuano, Michel Richard and Bob Hurley gave the national prize to Kim as well. She won over competitors from nine other regions in the U.S. and Canada for her dish, a Chard-Rolled Duck Roulade. That netted her $10,000 and a one-year paid apprenticeship with one of the chef judges; she also won the Mystery Basket contest, one of several side competitions, and comes home with a total of $22,000 in total winnings.
