Jonathan Gold sure is a busy beaver these days, dropping science for L.A. Times’ Daily Dish, dishing on the classics at L.A. Chamber Orchestra, and earning general big-ups for being “cool.” This Saturday, the critic rests not, stretching his schedule to appear on a panel discussion on fair food labor practices at the coincides with César Chávez Day with intentions of forwarding responsible resource cooking and the joys and struggles that come with seeking true foods. Organized with the City of Los Angeles’ Food Policy Council, the event will come with chef demos, live tunes, and a little food truckery. So, what’s the plan?
The day starts with a discussion of both the growing of and uses for edible native Californian plants, as practiced by Native people, and concludes with a panel discussion featuring Gold and two vital players in the “fair foods” movement, who will discuss justice for food workers while Kleiman moderates. In between will be that cabbage cooking contest you’ve always dreamed of and a food fair with demos, street food from Homegirl, The Border Grill Truck, and an actual lonchera.
