In a meaty confessional, Frank Bruni reveals that a few months ago he learned he had been ‘gouted.’ “About four and a half months ago I was given a diagnosis of gout, whose triggers are believed to include a surfeit of alcohol, a plenitude of red meat and any and all organ meat … ” He longingly references a decadent meal at Alain Ducasse at the Essex House where he and Sam Sifton ate everything but the kitchen sink, and that was only because it wasn’t doused in either butter, foie gras, or vodka. Bruni’s new lease on life entails minimal alcohol, much contemplation, and a few flare-ups that he’s actually “almost happy” about. [NYT]
