Cassava Bakery & Café (3519 Balboa Street at 36th Avenue), a small new venture from the newlywed team of Chris Toliao and Yuka Iori, softly opens today in the outer Richmond. They’ve got a daily changing menu of unique sandwiches, soups, Ritual coffee, pastries (think peanut-butter-cornflake cookies and other fun stuff), Japanese-style breakfast items, and more. Toliao is a former sous chef at Luce, and Iori has been working behind the bar at Starbelly since they opened. The two named their restaurant both as a reflection of Yuka’s name (cassava root being of the yucca family), and because of a favorite Filipino cassava cake from Chris’s childhood.
They’re open weekdays and mornings starting at 7 a.m., and for early dinner on weekends until 8 p.m., and closed on Tuesdays. Example dinner-type items from test meals and such include a cauliflower and green apple soup with queso fresco crostini; and a cherry-tomato focaccia with mozzarella and basil pesto. See a sample menu below, and check out our slideshow for a sneak peek of a couple of dishes, and a look inside.
