The Corner to Become The Perch, and New Owners Take Over Weird Fish

The Corner, in years past.
The Corner, in years past.

We’ve been curious ever since The Corner shuttered for good in October what might become of the place, the space being on a pretty prominent corner (18th and Mission) at one end of a strip of foodinista destinations. Now the Scoop brings word that the place has changed hands, along with nearby Weird Fish (the two actually are in the same building), and it will become The Perch, an all-day “neighborhood European-style cafe,” with good coffee and a small-plates menu.

New owners Peter Hood and chef Ryan Simas, who have worked together at St. Francis Fountain, are taking over the two restaurants from owners Philip Bellber and Carolyn Blair, who co-own Boogaloos and Parada 22 together (Bellber also owns Cha-Cha-Cha). They plan to reopen the popular but lately shuttered Weird Fish as Dante’s Weird Fish, with a similar menu of fish, vegetarian and vegan dishes, by March.

Simas, as some may recall, is chef de cuisine at Farallon, and he won high praise for his work, to the tune of three and a half stars, from Michael Bauer in 2010.

Look for The Perch to open by late spring, if all goes according to plan.
