Also today Food & Wine unveiled their editorial picks for the Best New Pastry Chefs in the country, and the representative for San Francisco is Quince’s Devin McDavid. We had the pleasure of sampling McDavid’s desserts during our recent dessert tour, and we can tell you the man is talented. Food & Wine chose a class of five chefs from across the country to highlight in the May issue, which will be the first of its kind honoring the sweeter section of the kitchen — their prestigious annual Best New Chefs issue, with ten savory chefs from around the country, will be out in June, with the winners announced in early April.

San Francisco represented well for pastry this year, with twelve of the sixteen picks for the western region in their “people’s” poll — including McDavid and regional winner Francis Ang of Fifth Floor — coming from right here in the Bay Area. McDavid also had the honor of being included in Tasting Table’s recent roundup of new pastry stars, and Grub Street featured three of his desserts from Quince and Cotogna in our recent national and local dessert slideshows.

The four other Food & Wine editorial picks, with some representative dessert shots, are:

· Shawn Gawle - Corton, New York City (see his Birch & Chocolate dessert here)
· Bryce Caron - Blackbird, Chicago (see his frozen cucumber mousse here)
· Laura Sawicki - La Condesa, Austin (see her Duck Egg Flan here)
· Stella Parks - Table 310, Lexington, Kentucky (see her homemade rainbow sprinkles here)
